Frequently Asked Questions

Following are frequently asked questions regarding
Veggie Trader. If you have a question you can't find
answered here, please feel free to contact us
and we’ll get right back to you.

What does it cost to use Veggie Trader?

Zip, zero, nada, nothing… Posting listings, browsing
listings, and registering with Veggie Trader is
absolutely free.

Must I register first to use Veggie Trader?

Yes. Registering is quick and easy, and allows us to
provide you with a better experience through the
creation of your own account and the ability to
exchange anonymous messages with other members.

How long will my produce listing stay posted?

You can specify the number of days your listing will be posted, to a maximum of 30 days. After this,
your listing will be removed automatically unless you renew it.

You may also remove a listing yourself at any time by selcting My Listings in My Account. This is particularly handy if you have sold or traded all the produce you initially offered in a listing.

Can I change or edit a listing I’ve posted?

Yes. You can edit a listing you’ve posted by selecting My Listings in My Account.

Am I limited to only searching for produce in my zip code?

No. Use our search bar to enter the number of miles around your zip code by which you’d like to
expand your search. You can also enter a nearby zip code and search for listings in that area.
Leaving the mileage box empty will perform a search of only the zip code you enter.

What if I'm looking to buy something specific and can't find it listed?

If you can't find what you're looking for, you can post a listing in our Wanted section and see if
anyone in your area with the produce you want responds.

If I post a listing, how will I be contacted by other Veggie Trader members regarding my listing?

Our system allows you to be contacted and respond to other Veggie Trader members anonymously.
Once you've posted a listing, we notify you via e-mail when other Veggie Trader members wish to
contact you concerning your listing. You can communicate anonymously via our system with other
members until you feel comfortable revealing your contact info and making a trade, sale, or purchase.

What will I get if I subscribe to your newsletter?

We're not entirely certain yet, but we hope to send out an e-mail newsletter periodically with tips on
gardening, eating locally, interesting recipes, links to other organizations/groups doing interesting
work in the area of local food, etc.

Can I include pictures of my produce in my listings?

Yes! In fact, we recommend uploading pictures of the produce you have available with your listings. Everybody likes to get an idea of what they’re buying or trading for. Show us your delicious produce!

Do I need a license to sell or trade produce, seeds, and/or plants?

Possibly. Some states, regions, and localities require a license before you can sell or trade your homegrown produce, extra seeds, or plants. Other's have no such requirements. Please check with your local authorities and your state
to be certain you are in compliance with state and local laws before using Veggie Trader.

I don't have produce to trade. Can I trade something else?

Sure, as long as what you’re trading is legal for trade or sale and isn't something otherwise
prohibited by our Terms of Use, such as meat, dairy, or eggs.

Can I trade other food items I raise in my backyard, such as eggs?

No. Meat products, dairy products, and eggs are heavily regulated and often not legal for
trade or sale without a license. Trading such items is a violation of our Terms of Use.

I think my church, office, or community group would be interested in Veggie Trader.
Is there a way for us to use Veggie Trader as a way to trade among our group?

Yes. We encourage people to tell others about Veggie Trader in order to form safe trading
communities. If you are a member of a religious organization, business, or other group
whose members may be interested in Veggie Trader, please spread the word and include
the name of your organization in your listings on Veggie Trader. That way members of
your organization can easily find each other’s produce by doing a text search using the
organization's name.

help setting this up. If you'd like, we can even set up a special area of the website for your group
or organization to trade among its members.

I belong to an organization focused on sustainability and fostering local economy. Can my organization be listed in your Friends section?

Sure, contact us. If you're organization is a good match, we’ll be happy to put up a link from our website. Also, please let us know if you’d like to link to us from your site.

How do I logoff of Veggie Trader?

Hit the My Account button in the navigation bar, and then choose the Logoff link below.
